MPCA Seeks Comments on Environmental Review for New Lake Elmo Sewage Line

Contact: Alexis Donath, 651-757-2312

St. Paul, Minn. — The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is seeking comments on an Environmental Assessment Worksheet for the proposed construction of new sewage line in Lake Elmo.  The public comment period for the EAW will begin April 18 and run through May 18.

The proposed project includes installation of 6,600 feet of new sewage line. The city of Lake Elmo proposed construction of a new sewage line in 2007 and undertook a voluntary environmental review process on the project at that time.  Construction on that project has not yet begun. This new project replaces a portion of the line from the previous project with a larger, higher-capacity line. Wastewater from the line will ultimately flow to the Met Council's Eagles Point Wastewater Treatment Facility in Cottage Grove.

An EAW is a preliminary environmental review that examines how a proposed project might affect the environment. The MPCA will use comments it receives on this EAW to evaluate the potential for significant environmental effects from the project and to determine whether an Environmental Impact Statement, a more comprehensive environmental review, is needed.

The EAW is posted online at www.pca.state.mn.us/news/eaw/index.html and may also be viewed at the MPCA's St. Paul office at 520 Lafayette Road N.

Comments on the EAW should be submitted in writing by 4:30 p.m. on May 18, 2011, to Nancy Drach, MPCA, 520 Lafayette Road N., Saint Paul, MN 55155-4194, by e-mail to nancy.drach@state.mn.us, or by fax to 651-297-2343. Questions may also be directed to Drach.

All comments must be submitted in writing, and should include a statement of the commenter's interest in the EAW; a statement of the suggested action the MPCA should take, including references to specific sections; and specific reasons supporting the position. Late comments will not be considered.
