MPCA Adopts Metro Solid Waste Management Policy Plan

Contact: Nancy Miller, 507-206-2612

St. Paul, Minn. — The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) recently adopted revisions to the Metropolitan Solid Waste Management Policy Plan. The policy plan outlines requirements, goals and strategies for managing solid waste in the seven-county Twin Cities metropolitan area.

The new policy plan includes recommendations from the 2009 Integrated Solid Waste Management Stakeholder Process that are geared toward greenhouse gas reduction, energy conservation, and environmental protection. Specifically, the new policy plan:

  • places more emphasis on environmental outcomes, such as greenhouse gas reductions;
  • holds stakeholders accountable for achieving the plan’s goals and objectives;
  • promotes a regional approach to solid waste management;
  • contains specific objectives that support waste reduction, recycling and organics recovery, and sets a ceiling on landfilling in the metro area;
  • provides strategies to help reach objectives; and
  • estimates regional system costs

The new Metropolitan Solid Waste Management Policy Plan and all submittals received during its public comment period are available on the MPCA website at /hqzq86a.
