Duluth, Minn. -- The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) invites the public to review and comment on an environmental assessment worksheet (EAW) for the proposed construction of the Central Iron Range Sanitary Sewer District (CIRSSD) Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The CIRSSD involves the cities of Chisholm, Buhl and Kinney, the township of Great Scott and the Minnesota Discovery Center. The proposed project would replace aging wastewater treatment systems in Chisholm and Buhl and provide service to unsewered areas of Great Scott Township.
The new plant would consolidate wastewater treatment at a central location, add lift stations in Buhl and Chisholm and a sewer pipe along U.S. Highway 169 to connect Buhl and Kinney. The plant’s capacity is 2.5 million gallons per day. Construction is expected to begin in August, and the new system would go online in October 2012.
The proposed plant site is adjacent to the existing Chisholm wastewater stabilization ponds, south of the Sherman Pit, a water-filled former iron ore mining pit, and north of the Mesabi Trail. The proposed discharge would be to Barber Creek using the existing discharge outfall. Barber Creek flows into the East Swan River, which discharges into the St. Louis River and ultimately, Lake Superior.
An EAW provides basic information about how a proposed project could potentially affect the environment.
