Green Up Your Mailbox for the New Year

Contact: Alexis Donath, 651-757-2120

St. Paul, Minn. - Minnesotans who resolve to be more green in the New Year can get a jump start by removing their name from junk mail lists. According to the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, Americans throw away some 5.8 million tons of unsolicited mail in a typical year. At www.dmachoice.org, consumers can remove their names from mailing lists for unwanted advertising, donation requests, catalogs and other offers.

Another site, www.catalogchoice.org, allows customers to unsubscribe from specific catalogs online. Opting out of credit card offers reduces opportunities for identity theft as well as reducing waste. Consumers can opt out for five years or permanently at www.optoutprescreen.org. More information on reducing waste is available from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency at www.reduce.org.
