Environmental Protection Agency, Americans throw away some 5.8 million tons of unsolicited mail in a typical year. Another site, www.catalogchoice.org, allows customers to unsubscribe from specific catalogs online. Opting out of credit card offers reduces opportunities for identity theft as well as reducing waste. Consumers can opt out for five years or permanently at www.optoutprescreen.org.
