St. Paul, Minn. -- The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is seeking comments on proposed revisions to the Metropolitan Solid Waste Management Policy Plan. The Policy Plan outlines requirements, goals and strategies for managing solid waste in the seven-county Twin Cities Metropolitan Area. The public comment period begins Sept. 13 and continues through Nov. 15, 2010.
A public meeting will be held on Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the MPCA Office, 520 Lafayette Road N., St. Paul. The purpose of the meeting is to present information about the project and to collect feedback on the proposed Policy Plan revisions. The comment period will remain open for 30 days following the public meeting.
The current Policy Plan has been in place since 2004. The proposed revisions include recommendations from the 2009 Integrated Solid Waste Management Stakeholder Process geared toward greenhouse gas reduction, energy conservation and environmental protection. Specifically, the revised Policy Plan:
-- Places more emphasis on environmental outcomes, such as greenhouse gas reductions
-- Holds stakeholders accountable for achieving the goals and objectives of the plan
-- Promotes a regional approach to solid waste management
-- Contains numerical objectives
-- Provides strategies to help reach objectives
-- Estimates regional system costs
-- Identifies MPCA initiatives which could support the plan
The updated Policy Plan is available for review on the MPCA Web site at www.pca.state.mn.us/public-notices.
