St. Paul, Minn. - The 2009 Governor's Awards for Excellence in Waste and Pollution Prevention were presented yesterday to 18 organizations. The annual awards program honors superior environmental achievement by Minnesota businesses, nonprofits, local governments and private institutions.
"These organizations have found innovative and resourceful ways to reduce waste and pollution, often increasing efficiency and lowering costs at the same time," Governor Tim Pawlenty said.
The awards recognize outstanding environmental success in three categories: business/nonprofit, government and partnerships. The winning projects were selected by three independent panels of judges with a broad range of environmental expertise.
Twenty-nine applications were submitted for the Governor's Awards. Judges selected eight of those for full awards and 10 for honorable mention.
The eight projects selected for full awards were:
- Business/nonprofit: Children's Dental Services, Minneapolis, and Lubrication Technologies Inc., Golden Valley.
- Government: Carver County, for its Innovative Approach to Collecting and Composting Organics; Dakota County, for its Farmland and Natural Areas Program; and the U.S. Postal Service Vehicle Maintenance Facility, Duluth.
- Partnerships: Great River Energy, Maple Grove, for its Green Building and Corporate Recycling Initiatives; Project Green Fleet (Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and Minnesota Environmental Initiative); and the Southeast Como Improvement Association, Minneapolis.
These 10 projects received honorable mention:
- Business/nonprofit: Cypress Semiconductor Minnesota, Bloomington; Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center, Lanesboro; Habitat for Humanity ReStores; Rural Renewable Energy Alliance, Pine River; and Sappi Cloquet LLC, Cloquet.
- Government: City of Woodbury City Hall Expansion and Remodel; and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' Electric Vehicles Project.
- Partnerships: City of Hanover, for its Conservation Design Land Use Planning; the Prior Lake Outlet Channel Restoration Project; and the University of Minnesota-Duluth Life Science Building Renovation.
