Public Meeting Set For Duluth Superfund Site Reviews

Contact: Anne Perry Moore, 218-723-2356 Duluth, Minn -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) will present information about the second five-year review of Duluth's St. Louis River Superfund site at a public information meeting on Jan. 30, 2008. The meeting will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Goodfellowship Community Center at 1302 88th Ave. West in Duluth's Morgan Park neighborhood. EPA and MPCA staff will be available for 30 minutes before and after the meeting to answer questions. The EPA considers the St. Louis River Superfund site as one site. However, the MPCA, named by EPA as the lead agency responsible for selecting the most appropriate cleanup remedy, separated the site into two - the U.S. Steel Superfund site and St. Louis River/Interlake/Duluth Tar (SLIRDT) Superfund site. That arrangement allowed MPCA staff to work exclusively with the companies financially responsible for conducting each site's clean-up activities. The meeting's schedule will be:
5:30 - 6:00 EPA, MPCA staff available for questions
6:00 - 6:25Welcome, introductions, Five-Year Review process overview
6:25 - 6:55St. Louis River / Interlake / Duluth Tar Superfund site Five-Year Review update

7:25 - 7:45U.S. Steel Superfund site contaminated sediment update
7:45 - 8:00U.S. Steel Superfund site redevelopment update
8:00 - 8:30EPA, MPCA staff available for questions
Both sites' documents are on file at the Duluth Public Library, West Duluth Branch, located at 5830 Grand Ave. The documents include the final cleanup activities, also known as the Records of Decision (ROD), site assessments, historical data and copies of documents that have been provided to residents in affected communities. The U.S. Steel site's ROD, signed Feb. 22, 1989, addressed 18 individual cleanup sites, known as "Operable Units," and two areas identified for future remedial actions. Three SLRIDT RODs, signed Sept. 28, 1990, Sept. 26, 1995 and Aug. 24, 2004, addressed the Tar Seep Operable Unit, the Soil Operable Unit and the Sediment Operable Unit, respectively. Documents related to the sites' first five-year review, completed in 2003, are also on file.
