Saint Paul, Minn. - The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has completed its clean-up decision for the affected Highway 96 Dump Superfund Site properties located on the west side of Gilfillian Lake in North Oaks, Minn.
The Minnesota Decision Document (MDD) amendment requires the responsible parties, Whirlpool Corporation and Reynolds Metals Company, to install deeper drinking water wells for any homes in the area that received a well advisory from the Minnesota Department of Health. The amendment also requires the companies to continue sampling residential and monitoring wells in the Gilfillan Lake area. If ground water contamination in any of the Ski Lane Ravine monitoring wells exceeds healthy levels, the amendment requires the companies to implement an off-site ground water pumpout system in the area.
A public meeting was held in February to discuss the proposed clean-up plans. Public comments were accepted until March 21, 2008, and compiled into a summary that is attached to the MDD amendment. The MDD amendment and other documents related to the site are available from the MPCA. To receive a copy, call 651-296-7805. Copies are being mailed directly to those individuals who commented or previously expressed an interest. The administrative record for this project is available at the North Oaks City Hall at 100 Village Center Dr, Suite 150.
