St. Paul, Minn. -- If your home or business is located in a flood-prone area, take some precautionary steps to move or dispose of items that could become hazardous waste when you do your early spring cleaning.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) recommends disposing of solvents, paints, paint thinners, pesticides, batteries, tires and household cleaners and other chemicals by taking them to your county's household hazardous waste. A list of county sites is posted at www.pca.state.mn.us/waste/hhw/hhw-localprograms.html. Store items that you keep in a place that you are certain will not become flooded.
It is also a good idea to move canned goods and other foodstuffs so they will be out of harm's way. If damaged by floodwaters, they would become contaminated and have to be thrown away. Bottled or other potable water should also be moved to a place that is unlikely to flood.
More information about minimizing pollution and health risks from flooding is available on the MPCA's Web site at www.pca.state.mn.us/hot/floods.html.
