Comments Sought on Proposed Brown County Landfill Expansion

Contact: Nancy Miller, 507-280-3590 Toll-free: 1-800-657-3864 Rochester, Minn. - The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) seeks comments on an Environmental Assessment Worksheet prepared for a proposed expansion of the Brown County Solid Waste Landfill facility. The facility is located in Sigel Township, south of New Ulm on County Road 11. Citizens are invited to comment on the EAW until July 2, 2008. The proposed expansion would include construction of a new solid waste disposal area, known as a cell. Additional components of the project include upgrades to the stormwater and leachate (liquid runoff) collection systems, and new road construction. The landfill accepts mixed municipal and industrial solid waste. The expansion would add 14 acres, or an estimated 1,842,500 cubic feet of volume, to the facility. The expansion and upgrades would allow the facility to meet disposal demands for the next 20 years. The EAW provides basic information about how a proposed project could potentially affect the environment and helps determine whether an Environmental Impact Statement, a more comprehensive environmental review, is needed. Interested parties may comment on the EAW during the public notice period, from Mon., June 2, through Wed., July 2. Written comments must be received at the MPCA St. Paul office by 4:30 p.m. on the last day of the comment period. Copies of the Brown County Landfill Expansion EAW are available at:
