Public Information Meeting on September 19 on Pollution in Little Rock Creek

Contact: Stephen Mikkelson, 218-855-5001 Brainerd, Minn. -- A study to identify pollution in Little Rock Creek will be discussed at a public meeting at the Sauk Rapids-Rice Middle School Community Arts Center on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m. Water quality testing has shown there are less than normal levels of plant and animal life within the creek. Officials from the Benton Soil and Water Conservation District and Minnesota Pollution Control Agency will present information and answer questions regarding the project. The Total Maximum Daily Load project is part of a nationwide effort under the federal Clean Water Act to identify and clean up pollution in streams, rivers and lakes. Every two years, states are required to submit a list of impaired waters to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. A TMDL project is a scientific study that calculates the maximum amount of a pollutant a water body can receive without exceeding water quality standards. For more information about the Sept. 19 meeting, contact Maggie Leach at 218-855-5018. Further information on the state's impaired waters list and TMDL studies is available on the Web at www.pca.state.mn.us/water/tmdl/index.html.
