MPCA Reissue Crow Wing County Landfill Permit

Contact: Stephen Mikkelson, 218-855-5001 Brainerd, Minn. -- The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has recently reissued the operating permit for the Crow Wing County Landfill. The purpose of the permit is to allow for continued operation of the municipal solid waste landfill. Under Minnesota law, these kinds of permits must be applied for every five years. With this permit, the facility will be modified to allow for an increased capacity of nearly 30,000 cubic yards of waste. That will bring its full capacity to nearly two million cubic yards. The permit also allows for a large leachate treatment pond. Leachate is created when rainwater and snow melt percolate down through the waste at a landfill. The permit also allows for the installation of an active gas extraction system. This system will collect and burn off methane and other gases that are created as waste decomposes. The facility also collects metals, appliances, tires, electronics, vehicle fluids and batteries for recycling, yard waste for composting, and accepts household hazardous wastes for proper disposal. More information on the MPCA's solid waste program can be found at www.pca.state.mn.us/waste/index.html.
