MPCA Proposes Update of State Superfund List

Contacts: Barbara Skoglund, 651-296-5965 Toll-free: 1-800-657-3864 Saint Paul, Minn. - The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) today released its recommended updates to the State Superfund Priority List, which includes contaminated sites that threaten or potentially threaten public health and the environment. The list is revised annually as new sites are added and old ones are cleaned up. If the proposed changes are approved, 77 sites will be on the State Superfund List. The public is invited to comment on the proposed changes through Aug. 3, 2007. The MPCA recommends:
· Adding the Fish Hatchery Dump Site near Pigs Eye Lake in St. Paul. This large municipal dump accepted all types of wastes, and further investigation and cleanup activities are needed.
· Removing the Kurt Manufacturing Company Site located at 5280 N.E. Main St., Fridley. Contaminants from storage bins and a sump polluted the soil and groundwater at the site, which was added to the State Superfund List in 1984. Necessary cleanup has been completed, a restrictive covenant is on the property and the site no longer poses a threat to human health or the environment.
· Delisting one area of the Brooklyn Park Dump Site and delisting the soil area of Whiteway Cleaners (also known as Despatch Laundry) Site in Minneapolis. If a responsible party cannot be identified - or is unable or unwilling to take appropriate action - listed projects are eligible for funding from the state Environmental Fund, to conduct investigation and cleanup activities. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency maintains the Federal Superfund List, also known as the National Priorities List. Generally, sites listed on the national list are larger and more complex, and pose greater potential risks to human health and the environment than sites listed only on the State Superfund List. Citizens can call Gary Krueger at the MPCA, 651-296-6139 or toll-free at 1-800-657-3864 for more information. Written comments on the proposed MPCA additions must be received by Gary Krueger, MPCA, 520 Lafayette Road N., Saint Paul, MN 55155-4194 before 4:30 p.m., Aug. 3, 2007.
