Contact: Anne Perry Moore, 218-302-6605

Duluth, Minn. --  Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) today invited the public to an open house and informational meeting on May 3, 2010 regarding a draft air permit amendment for the United Taconite LLC (UTAC) facility near Forbes, Minn. The meeting will be held at Clinton Town Hall, 8907 Highway 37, in Iron, Minn.

An open house will be held from 6 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. with MPCA staff available to share information and answer questions. The information meeting will begin at 6:30. MPCA staff will present an overview of the agency’s permitting process and a description of the proposed permit amendments. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.

UTAC’s proposed air permit amendments address an increase in pellet production, allow facility modifications related to alternate fuel use in existing equipment and the testing of biomass-based fuels, limit emissions and establish requirements to ensure no net increase of mercury emissions from the project.

Formal written public comments will be taken at this meeting; other opportunities to comment may be made via U.S. mail, fax and e-mail through May 11, 2010 to the attention of Suzanne Baumann, MPCA Industrial Division, 520 Lafayette Road North, St. Paul, MN, 55155.
