The former U.S. Steel mill site was declared a Superfund site in 1983. In 1989, a formal cleanup plan identified and addressed 18 areas for cleanup and two other areas were identified for future remedial actions. Documents related to the site's first and second Five-Year Reviews, and formal processes used to determine if previously-conducted cleanups were effective, were completed in 2003 and 2008. Site-related documents, including the Five-Year Reviews' results, are available at the Duluth Public Library, West Duluth branch at 5830 Grand Ave., and on the Web at www.pca.state.mn.us/cleanup/sites/ussteel/index.html.
