Carey Named MPCA's Interim Northeast Regional Office Manager

Contact: Anne Perry Moore 218-723-2356 Duluth, Minn. - The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) recently named Pat Carey, a 20-year veteran of the agency, as the interim Northeast Regional Manager. Carey, who most recently supervised the agency's Watershed Unit for northeastern Minnesota, will fill the position held by Suzanne Hanson while she works at the agency's St. Paul office in the Industrial Division. Upon making the announcement, Leo Raudys, Regional Division Director, said, "Pat's broad range of experience working in St. Paul and Duluth, and his extensive knowledge of the northeastern part of the state will serve him well as he steps into this new role." Carey joined the MPCA in 1984 after completing a bachelor's degree in government at St. John's University. During his tenure at the agency, Carey has worked on statewide hazardous waste initiatives and water quality issues related to the Lake Superior and Rainy River basins. Based in the MPCA's Duluth office, Carey assumed his new position on June 1, 2005. As regional manager, he provides local support to all of the agency's environmental programs and oversees area watershed-based services. The MPCA's Northeast Regional office staff serve Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake and St. Louis counties and specialize in a wide range of environmental-protection programs including water quality monitoring, basin planning, impaired waters activities, solid and hazardous waste, air quality permitting, wastewater, stormwater and emergency response. Carey is a native of Biwabik, Minn. He and his family currently live in Lakeland, south of Biwabik.
